RESONANT FILTER SET

P565 SIREN

Two resonant filters, two notch and peak bands, two envelope followers, and a drive that goes all the way to overdrive.

Siren brings together the essence of the 1970s active filter set nicknamed the Little Dipper and the ladder filter every synth player knows, then adds what Pulsar Modular does: transformer-coupled drive, an overdrive that goes far past eleven, a stepped filter mode in the dub tradition of King Tubby's Big Knob, two envelope followers that make any of the filters move with the music, and a modulated delay.

P565 Siren, the wine-red unit on a mosaic floor with the HPF, two notch and peak bands and the LPF lit in red, green and blue, DRIVE, OVERDRIVE and POWER in the middle

Half instrument, half effect.

Siren wraps itself in and around the source until it sounds like part of the instrument, not something applied from outside.

Four filters sit on the panel. The high pass runs from 20 Hz to 7.5 kHz, the low pass from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, each with 12 or 24 dB per octave and a resonance that self-oscillates about four tenths of the way up, plus an 18 dB slope built for wilder moves. The low pass has a second, smoother 24 dB topology behind the ALT label. Between them, two bands from 20 Hz to 20 kHz work as band reject or bell, notch or bandpass, three widths each, with a range switch that narrows the sweep to a decade for fine control. A step filter mode swaps the continuous cutoffs for the frequencies of the dub-era stepped filters.

Two envelope followers turn any of the four into a dynamic filter: routing to the cutoff or the band center, AMOUNT in either direction, ATTACK, RELEASE, LEVEL and three SPEEDs, an external sidechain, and the MU mode that hugs the signal for the vowel-like funk the guide calls the quack. DRIVE sits before or after the filters, OVERDRIVE and its slightly more articulate sibling HYPERDRIVE sit behind one button, BIAS runs the circuit hot or cool, and the Time Machine adds a modulated delay on the wet or the dry signal.

The filters work well in bass drums and toms. I've been using them on the toms and getting a natural low end.

This plugin is DEEP. You can pull off some pretty cool stuff like extreme notch filtering, stereo-widening, movement, EQ and more! The Drive and Overdrive features are a little too much for most tracks I work with, but it's nice to know it's there if needed.

I cannot do the plugin justice with a review. Sounds lovely. I suggest downloading the demo, or at the very least watching the "P565 Siren by Pulsar Modular: Full Walkthrough with Audio Examples" video on YouTube. The creator of the video goes through various features and, more importantly, some great audio examples. Very nice addition to the tool set.

If you're a singer-songwriter guitarist who's interested in exploring new sonic territories and pushing the boundaries of traditional guitar tones, I highly recommend checking the P565 SIREN out. It requires some experimentation and sound design knowledge to fully utilize its potential.

For me, a great filter can transform an ordinary sound into a great sound. A great filter can also add to a great sound and transform that into a musical personality! Something in your song that you can't unhear, but in the best way, or something that can add just enough movement and vibe to a track that brings it to life. My favorite filter in the analog realm is my Erica Synths Acid Box 3 and my other digital favorite is the P565 Siren! I can be subtle with it, or go completely nuts in the most musical way!

Simply put, P565 SIREN is a different kind of filter set. Although it performs the same functions as other filters, the warmth and resonance combined with the new delay circuit create a completely unique sound. You should definitely give it a try!

Siren called to me...

There were so many surprises with Siren that I was not expecting. Of course the filters sound fantastic and the resonance has been implemented very musically. Using it for acoustic guitars has been a pleasure in that it excels at gently carving out the boomy frequencies and generously highlighting the exact harmonic spectrum that you want to hear.

A lot of fun begins when you engage the envelope filters. This is my favorite for funking out bass guitar. You get more control than say the classic Mu-Tron III. I've found some envelope filter sounds that are so dang quacky and in your face. It gets all the liquid-rubbery bubble you'd want for staccato guitar.

The big surprise for me was the drive section. It has two modes: a subtle saturation (as transparent as the 'b' in subtle) which serves great for as mixing/mastering saturator as well as for drive on a bass, guitar, or synth).

The second overdrive mode is high gain and will destroy drums (in a good way, of course!). The two drive modes really help bring out definition for bass and guitar and I regularly use Siren as an overdrive. Moving the drive after the filters allows for the filters to shape the character and saturation amount of the drive. Putting them after allows them tone shaping. It kills for guitar solos!

Siren is also perfect for warming up soft synths. Not all soft synths are made the same, but I find you can make even mediocre ones come to life by running them into Siren and adding a light amount of drive and then shaping the EQ with the filters afterwards.

The GUI is easy on the eyes and makes for a pleasant work flow and just a great vibe for spending time using it. Pulsar Modular regularly updates their plugins and does a great job of listening to users.

I make techno and filters are an absolutely essential tool for me in shaping my tones. In terms of pure sound, the P65 Siren is the best filter plugin I have ever heard. I own and use the SoundToys FilterFreak, Audio Damage Filter Station, Softube Mutronics Mutator, and the Softube Overstayer M-A-S Extended which also has resonant lowpass and highpass filters. These plugins all have useful features, but the P65 Siren destroys them in terms of analog authenticity.

Where most filter plugins fall apart is with the sound of the resonance. The resonance on the SoundToys FilterFreak for example has a very thin and grating sound to it. As anyone who has used analog synths knows, the resonance is a crucial component to getting those deep and huge sounds, to fatten up your kick drum, synth bass etc. The resonance on the P65 Siren sounds fantastic and very very analog. In fact, it reminds me very much of my Electrix Filter Factory, which is my favorite hardware analog filter. Try opening up the HPF to about 31 on a kick drum and then dial in the resonance. You will get an incredibly fat and analog sound.

With the other filter options like bandpass, notch, etc, this is a very versatile tone shaping plugin. The Drive also has a very unique and aggressive sound, perhaps even too aggressive for some, but certainly useful for electronic music.

The only improvements that I could suggest are, it would be nice to have LFOs, and the ability to sync the tempo of the modulation to the tempo in your DAW. The Overdrive feature also is extremely aggressive and I think some sort of wet / dry control would be useful. While this plugin does not have as deep a feature set as some others like the SoundToys Filter Freak, it more than makes up for it with the authentic analog sound, which is what I look for in a plugin, and is what Pulsar Modular totally delivers with all their plugins. I also strongly recommend the P42 Climax and the Lunar Lander - they're both fantastic and the support from Pulsar Modular has also been amazing! Keep up the great work guys!!

P565 Siren filters can compete with any filters on my hardware synthesizers while offering a variety of options and sounds, hence making it superior to hardware. Siren maintains the musical quality, adds no mud and is honest with the transients. The punch is retained and if you want, you can increase punch to absurd levels, without destroying the original signal. You can also go into minus with the RES of the LPF, which I think no other plugin (or Hardware?) does that. I don’t know of any EQ plugin with which you can work as clean and musical in order to eliminate unwanted frequencies, using a notch filter.

The 18 dB/oct filter has its very own unique charm. The built-in DRIVE is able to add a special character. Many other circuits in other plugins like to remove the punch and the transients from the signal plus making the high frequencies sound glassy-thin and scratchy. The siren’s drive retains the brilliance of the high frequencies a good amount and perfectly preserves the punch of the low frequencies. I haven’t heard anything like this from a plugin before. Siren has 2 envelope followers that can be adjusted very precisely to make them super-groovy. You can also control them via sidechain. There is an option to switch to an emulation of the Mu-Tron pedal via the options menu and elicit previously unheard chucka-quack funky sounds from Siren. I don’t know of any plugin emulation that can do this to such analog-ish perfection (and I know of a few). If Drive isn’t enough, Siren simply shoots into orbit with a brutal Overdrive circuitry.
There is a delay trim pot on board that you can use on wet or dry signal, together with the MIX knob you can squeeze out phasing, flanging and slapback delays out, there is additional phase rotation on wet and dry signal. Working with Siren is an adventure by itself you start somewhere and ends somewhere else. Join the journey!

P565 Siren Filter Set, like all other Pulsar Modular plugins, ended up replacing my usual "go to".
Analog, creamy, deep a pure treat. The drive balances and tames the sound so that it is more docile for further processing.

Another hit from this company :-)...
The filter sounds real and analogue, the resonance is perfect and the saturation.....it's something I don't find in any other plugin ...only in my real analog gear (I own alot of analog synths)
Higly recommended...this is another definitive keeper for me,one that rules them all

Initially gave the demo a spin for the prerelease prior to 1.0, tried it for a few days and put it back on the shelf being underwhelmed by it initially, but knew the keep an eye on any revisions or offers in the pipeline as I've liked what I've purchased from them in the past (P42, and LunarLander)

Attempting to use it a bit afterwards the demo expired, and a timely and generous 25% coupon delivered with a 1.1 updated release to my email inbox.

Upon diving in first thing after an hour of playing around where both musical and emotional filters that truly sing. Apply however you'd like, lightly, heavily, shape, twist and form everything from instruments, drums, vocals, having fun around "reamping" guitars and run the dry/wet levels with some delay (by the mix knob), push synths out in front or in the back without sounding dull killing the tone, smash and trash basslines in incredibly musical ways and put loops, percussions, drums and kicks all in the pocket either dulling or shaping your transients. Like everything this developer makes, simply putting it over your mix and compositions doesn't break the musicality or tone of the production.

This next release of this filter set from Pulsar Modular dovetails on the exception collection of very musical tools this company continues to release. Highly anticipating the P11 in the future.

My new favorite filter. Sounds phenomenal All sorts of uses in my electronic music production, filtering down the aliasing from a dx7, shaping the tone on a breakbeat, filtering a low rumbly moog style sound... i could go on and on.

The real bonus came when I discovered the drive knob... and then the overdrive! Have not come across any distortion that sounds like this in the box. This thing will blow you away.

I have a handful of soft filters which are on my go to list, and this is now in my top 2. Even though to my ears I prefer the sound of a competitors convolution filter, this comes remarkably close and without the latency, automation and performance challenges/limitations of the convolution option.

Pulsar Modular are raising the bar massively in the world of plugins. I've been using the P42 Climax, Lunar Lander & the P565 Siren Filter Set for quite some time now and they are being used all the time on mix sessions. They sound incredible. The P565 Siren Filter Set is the most recent addition to my toolbox and it's amazing. Sound shaping is now so much fun. The P565 Siren Filter Set is such a creative tool. Sometimes I literally forget I'm using a plugin as Pulsar Modular products feel so analog both in sound & use. I really can't recommend them enough.

Even if it's subtracting, it's adding to the sound. If you try to add a little resonance to the kick drum or add a touch of resonance to you upper mids with a 12 db lowcut @4 Khz.. It is nothing out there as a plugin that could do this with this rich sound that fits almost immediately in your mix and stays there! All of it with no CPU consumption. I bought this and p42 and not a new computer. I would say: try it! What Pulsar Modular is doing here is such a great accomplishment. For me, they proof that it is possible to sound like analog hardware in the box and without beeing a CPU hog. Instruments are easy to seperate front to back, they are much more easy to fit into a mix (also P42) und upper mids and highs are smoothe, clear and a joy to listen to. If you are not able to hear the difference to the other main contenders, check your monitoring chain ;)

How come that Pulsar Modular Plugins are sounding so pleasing? After the best preamp, one of the top 3 BBD and Plate reverbs and an incredible fixed filter bank, that leaves some analog originals in the dust - here comes the next candidate for "plugin of the year": The P565. Sidechain is still is missing but this filter set already raises the bar for such renowned competitors as the Kazrog or Arturia Filters. Low pass. High Pass. Two notch filtes. Tunable resonance. Additional 0verdrive. And it sounds just great! I remain a fanboy. Pulsar Modular is a plugin league of its own. 5 Stars (only because there is no six star rating)!
